Teaching Assistant Harwich Information

Harwich is the most northerly coastal town in Essex. It is close to Felixstowe and Ipswich as well as Colchester and Clacton-on-Sea. It holds an important place in maritime history and started as a Naval base in 1657.

Harwich is famous for being the launching point for The Mayflower that carried English puritans to North America. Although the Naval presence has long gone, there is a continuing ferry service to the Netherlands.

Among the many historical places of interest, you will find the Electric Palace Cinema, built in 1911 and one of the oldest cinemas still around. It has a unique decorative facade and still has its original projection room. The older part of the town is a conservation area with a blend of medieval and 18th-century buildings.

There are 43 primary schools and 7 secondary schools in the Harwich area.
